If you already own the GOG Alpha Centauri only then uninstall it, redownload it again and the new installer contains Alien Crossfire now. That is a nice deal for people like myself who already owned it. Also, as far as I am aware with this package GOG is now the only retailer for both of these games anywhere. So, get your legal copy and it's been patched up for you all good too!
And yes, _Pax_, this game is classic. You can check the GOG forum for this game too and there are instructions for making it run at your desktop resolution as well.

This is so good all around that if you've never had the good grace to try SMAC or have the older original CDs which don't work very well on modern systems then seriously, again _Pax_, on sale for $2.99 and $5.99 regular. Totally worth it IMHO. I owned Alpha Centauri when it was new, back in 1998 or so, and I played the hell out of it then. I had a carefully constructed backup from my original disc which had the XP patch (it was a Windows 98 game!) and all the other patches applied. I've played using that archive for the last decade regularly.
So, when GOG did the release of Alpha Centauri I immediately bought it - much easier to maintain than my cobbled archive. And now that Alien Crossfire is included with the GOG version that is just gravy.
Perhaps I'll be playing this game for another decade: I pretty well have it figured out, I play a population game - I expand my bases like the cross-section of an onion with the outermost layers building colony pods and the inner layers, where a colony pod would take longer to pass through territory before building a base, build improvements. If my outermost onion layer is no longer expanding, likely because of reaching other factions, then I switch over to war mode to keep my expansion going but now by capturing bases, filling in captured territory with my own bases as necessary to maintain the minimum distance between bases. To sum up: the outermost layers are building out, and the innermost layers are building up. The minimum distance between bases is 2 tiles, I will build the minimum distance away always: less travel time for the colony pods (and support costs of them!) until a new base is established. Some formers to fill in the meager space between the bases with terrain improvements.
